The Moonlight that Clears Away the Darkness of Negativities
Composed by Panchen Lobsang Chökyi Gyaltsen
Homage to Guru Śākyamuni!
To all of the buddhas and their sons
Of the three times and ten directions,
Until I reach the essence of enlightenment
With respect I go for refuge.
To the infallible jewels of refuge,
With my hands folded I thusly entreat:
In this life and in other lives
All of the five actions of immediate retribution, the five actions of near-immediate retribution,
And the ten paths of non-virtue that I have done,
Empowered by the obscurations and the three poisons,
With my body, speech and mind
I sincerely confess to you, Protector.
All harmful actions to the Three Jewels and the guru,
To my mother, father, and others also,
That I have done and caused to be done
All of these I confess from my heart.
Those negative actions that are a cause for rebirth
In the terrifying hell realms, amongst the hungry ghosts or animals,
Rebirth outside of a central area, as someone mute, foolish, or holding wrong views;
All of these without exceptions I confess.
Due to the pride and arrogance,
Coming from wealth, youth, power and so forth,
I engaged in contemptuous and harmful actions toward others;
All of those, also, I confess.
In brief, all actions I have done under the power of ignorance
That are an obstacle to achieving higher rebirth, to liberation,
And to perfect omniscience,
With a mind of intense regret I confess.
In addition to those I have done myself,
Whatever perverted actions and negative deeds
I have caused to be done or rejoiced in the doing of,
All of these I completely confess.
All of the conquerors, endowed with great compassion,
And the magnanimous sons of the conquerors,
In your kindness toward me, one laden with negativity,
I request, please purify all of these wicked deeds!
Considering the non-virtuous deeds I have done in the past,
With a mind of regret, as if I had swallowed poison,
In the future, even at the cost of my life,
I will refrain from doing them again for even a moment.
Having confessed and vowed in this way,
Whatever merit I may have acquired
With that, may I and all wanderers in samsara
Quickly achieve enlightenment!
Colophon: Dependent upon the emphatic requests of Nangso Tashi Rabten, this “Moonlight that Clears Away the Darkness of Negativities” was composed by Gelong Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen so that virtue and goodness might increase without hindrance. It was transcribed by Getsul Lobsang Wangyal.
Oṃ| Let there be happiness and goodness!
The peerless founder, the King of the Śākyas,
The divine regent Maitreya, the invincible Mañjushrī,
The great trailblazers Nagārjuna and Asaṅga, and so forth,
To all of the root lineage gurus I respectfully prostrate.
By the power of whatever virtue I have accumulated in the three times
May all wanders in saṃsāra, oppressed by the three types of suffering
Always achieve the state of god or human being
And be established in the holy city of liberation.
May the collection of virtue produced in this way, the current of the Gaṅgā River and
The downward flowing ten million streams of merit,
Simultaneous with omniscience, enter the great ocean of Dharma and
Become a cause for prosperity and happiness to increase.
May those who don’t achieve that in this life
Never again be reborn in the lower realms,
But with the best support endowed with the leisures and freedoms, enriched by the three trainings
And quickly achieve the state of All Seeing.
By the compassionate blessings of the conquerors and their sons,
The words of truth of all those who achieved sagehood,
And the immutable truth of the dharmadhātu,
May the object of this pure prayer be accomplished.
Colophon: These words of supplication were composed by Gelong Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen, dependent on a request from Nangso Tashi Rabten and also my own fervent aspiration.
Oṃ Svasti|
The teachings of the Victorious One are the source of happiness and prosperity, a forest of wish-granting trees;
For the sake of actualizing the excellent result of supreme liberation for all the very many wanderers in saṃsāra,
Here in this great monastic institute of Tashi Lhundrup
May this inexhaustible river of Dharma charity increase!
May all the world be pure!
Translator’s Colophon: These two short texts, which are included under a single title in Panchen Lobzang Chökyi Gyaltsen’s collected works, were translated in Sera Je Monastery and then subsequently edited in Bodhgaya, January 2018, by Śākya Gelong Gyalten Lekden, who has little knowledge and fewer good qualities. All mistakes are my own. May any benefit and merit that comes from these texts be dedicated to the continued display of long life and good health on the part of all of the holy gurus.
